I see you have toutefois for ‘however’ and ‘nevertheless’. Dunno if you know but ‘neanmoins’ is used more for ‘nevertheless’.. as it doesn’t really mean the same as ‘however’, even in English.
Feel free to delete this out of your vocab builder, but I just thought I’d tell ya.. every little bit helps eh 🙂 and sorry if you already knew this

      2. edwinlaw - February 8, 2007

Mig, this is very kind of you to go through my list.

There were 4 definitions of ‘toutefois’ in my dictionary. I just picked the one I found making the most sense from the text. May be ‘yet’ is a better translation. Would you agree?

      3. frenchninja - February 8, 2007

They’re probably all interchangeable… ‘yet’ can be used like ‘nevertheless’ with ‘neanmoins’. Then again, ‘yet’ can also mean ‘hasn’t occured up until this point’ which in that case you would use ‘encore’ or ‘deja’ (‘still’).
Personally I would split them up as toutefois (however), neanmoins (nevertheless/yet) and deja (yet), but you’d probably be understood regardless.
Tell you what I’ll do – speak to my Dad this morning. Being more of a legitimate French ninja, he’ll know (I wasn’t born in France) 🙂
Please also excuse the lack of accents i.e with deja… it’s my keyboard

      4. frenchninja - February 9, 2007

According to the old man, ‘cependant’ is used for ‘however’, and toutefois and both neanmoins (which I also learnt can be a play on words of ‘missing nose’ (nez en moins) ) are interchangeable as ‘nevertheless’.

      So there you go.

      5. edwinlaw - February 10, 2007

      Thanks, Mig, for your input.
