Hello, I am Gregory Rivers. I am an Austrilian ‘Gweilo’. Here in Hong Kong, we are called ‘Gweilo’. Some don’t like it, but I am ok.

I have lived in Hong Kong for 16 years. I arrived in Hong Kong on 31 May 1987, and I have lived here ever since.

Most of the time I’ve been acting in TVB drama series, so I probably have many friends, who will know who I am, even to the point of saying to me “Hi, when I was a kid, I really liked to watch you acting!”. Mmm, I know I’m not young but never mind.

Actually I like to act and to sing, in Hong Kong I’ve had the opportunity to do both these different things, so I’m very happy. Especially if it is like “Teresa Teng stage play” or “Shanghai Blues” stage play, I’ve been able to do both and was very happy to do so.

gam2 le1 zau6 jau5 di1 din6 jing2 dou1 paak3 zo2 laa1: “biu2 ze2 nei5 hou2 je5″ laa1, “ngo5 si6 jat1 go3 caak6″ laa1, jau5 ling6 ngoi6 loeng5 saam1 go3 dou1 paak3 zo3.
Then there are some movies I’ve acted in: “Her Fatal Ways”, “Legendary Couple” and two or three others.

Sometimes I’ll do a voiceover for someone, for example for (Michael) Wong Man Tak. Wong Man Tak is very handsome, however sometimes he is very busy, thus has no time to do the voiceover, so I help to provide the voiceover.

Sometimes I do voiceovers for people in mandarin, because if I need to dub a gwailo, he originally spoke in english or cantonese, then I help to dub into mandarin.

gam2 le1 zeong1 loi4 ngo5 kei4 sat4 le1 jan1 wai4 ngo5 hai6 zung1 ji3 jam1 ngok6, jau6 zung1 ji3 zou6 hei3 le1, so2 ji5 ngo5 dou1 hei1 mong6 le1, zau6 wui5 lei4 gan2 jau5 jat1 go3 jit6 ciu4 le1, zau6 hai6 go1 mou5 toi4 kek6 ge3.
In the future, because I like music and acting, I hope it will be a hit, that is a musical.

Whether it is on a stage or in a movie, like the recently released “Chicago”, I also hope there are more and more of these things.

I hope I will get the opportunity myself to take part in a stage play, because these different things, music and acting, and in front of an audience, if it is on a stage, it has an audience, so then of course I’m very happy. Bye bye!

Hi there,I’m spanish and I’m trying to learn cantonese ,I’m doing it by myself with a few books, coz’in my country there little material as much as books as to find someone a native cantonese speaker to practice with, two years ago I went to hong kong on holydays in order to learn more about cantonese, and to my surprise most peolpe there they were talking to me in enlgish,I saw you and heard you in the forum monologe speaking in cant. and man, that was fantastic,I was taken aback hearing u.Do u have hong kong chinesse girl friend? I think that that help a lot isn’ it? why you went to h.k. and lived there so many time? is it difficult for a “gweilo” to fiend job? your advice will be really appreciate. thanks a lot.
Felipe.

2. edwinlaw - March 17, 2007

Hi Felipe, thanks for your comment.

Which monologue were you talking about? This self-introduction clip is from a Hong Kong actor Gregory. He is an Australian living in Hong Kong for 20 years.

I am a Cantonese native speaking, but I am not a language teacher. I am looking for ways to help out the Cantonese learners. This transcript is something I want to try out.

Do you find it helpful?

March 27, 2007

This is awesome. If only there were hundreds more transcripts of fluent speech, I would be so much more advanced by now.

Strange, seemed Filipe was writing the comment directly to Ho Kwok Wing himself.

As soon as I got the transcript, suddenly the puzzle was complete and I could instantly understand 100% of the HKW interview. I then amazingly heard many of the unknown words from the video on TV and could understand it when spoken on TV.

I really think the only way to boost vocab and listening fluency quickly is through following transcripts and listening to short MP3’s or clips over and over.

Thanks

4. edwinlaw - March 27, 2007

Milan, this is wonderful!

As you can see, this piece is still incomplete. I do find it time-consuming to complete it. So I wonder, if I provide the transcript in Chinese, do you think with the help of CantoDict, a typical intermediate Cantonese learner can do the translations and Jyutping by himself?

March 27, 2007

Hi Edwin.

That’s how I did it. I simply copy and pasted chunks of the sentence into the Cantodict Parser and voila; I had the missing words and sentence structure in jyutping and English.

You wrote 鐘意 instead of 鍾意; but I could still understand.

Thanks

6. edwinlaw - March 27, 2007

Milan, I think 鐘意 is correct.

7. Tom - May 6, 2007

Edwin

Thanks very much for this, I’ve been waiting to see when someone would complete this but since there seemed to be no progress I’ve had a shot myself. You’re right it is time-consuming, I think more so for myself with only poor Cantonese skills but it’s a start. I’m sure there are mistakes, so everyone please comment and then a final version can be put into the original posting.

Thanks Tom. That’s great! I have updated the transcript.

9. CanadianAutumn (a.k.a. platinumangel) - May 9, 2007

You are a god!

I couldn’t get even a quarter of the stuff he was saying when I first watched this clip some time last year. When you transcribed it though, it’s just like Milan–it all suddenly made sense and I can basically get 90-95% of the video by just listening.

Thank you for this. It’s amazing.

10. edwinlaw - May 9, 2007

I wish I can do more of this kind of transcriptions. But it is really time consuming. I hope others can contribute at will.

Anyone knows any free wiki tools outside that we can put the transcriptions?
